WATERFALLS OF INDIA

    People associate India with Taj Mahal, Ganges, wildlife and food but very few know that India has some of the most spectacular waterfalls . These waterfalls complement the diverse flora and fauna of the country. Seeing the water gushing down into the valley and lush jungles of India is truly a magnificent sight. Nature and adventure enthusiasts can combine travel to the prominent sites of India with a visit to any of these scenic waterfalls.  S o here are some water falls which are on my bucket list. 

DUDHSAGAR FALLS

The Dudhsagar waterfalls rest on the Mandovi River in Goa. Dudhsagar falls among the largest waterfalls in India with an altitude of 1017 feet. The falls are a sight to behold especially if you go there in the monsoons, when the fall is in full flow. Water falling down from a height forms clouds of milky foam at the bottom, creating a visual of aesthetic beauty. Set amidst the crescent shaped valley carpeted with lush green flora, the falls are a perfect getaway for your honeymoon. How To Reach: -Road – 60 kms from Panaji via roadways, 46 kms from Madgaon and 60 kms north of Belgaum. Best Time To Visit: From November to February during summers or June to September during monsoons.

TAMBDI SURLA FALLS

  Absolutely breathtaking and pristine, Tambdi Surla Falls is an incredible place for nature lovers. Not only is the waterfall a sight to behold, but the hike to it is also a worthy experience. As the cascade is within Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Park, which is one of the best places to visit in South Goa, y ou can expect to see a whole lot of animals. Remember to carry your camera along because the sight of colourful birds on the way is something you do not want to miss capturing in your lens.

NETRAVALI FALLS

  The fact that Netravali Falls is surrounded by nothing but calming silence and endless greenery makes it a perfect spot to visit with your spouse or partner. The picturesque trek to the waterfall will provide you with ample time to have an intimate conversation, while the plunge pool of the cascade will offer you endless playful moments. You could sit on the rocks for hours, just gazing at the surroundings and talking.

JOG FALLS

  Jog Falls , is a waterfall on the Sharavati river located in the Western Ghats Sagara taluk, Shimoga district. It is the second highest plunge waterfall in India. It is a segmented waterfall which depends on rain and season becomes a plunge waterfall. The falls are major attractions for tourists and is ranked 36th in the list of free-falling waterfalls, 490th in the world by list of waterfalls by total height, 128th in the list of single-drop waterfalls in the World by the waterfall database.

BAMANBUDO FALLS

  A well-maintained road makes Bamanbudo Falls among the easiest to reach in the state. This is why it is relatively more popular than some other waterfalls in Goa. A two or three-stepped cascade, depending on how you view it, it is a great spot to play in the cool water amidst lush greenery. Plus, its plunge pool is not too deep as the water doesn’t fall straight down. So, gather your group, and come here for a memorable outing with lots of fun.

MALLALLI WATERFALL

  The milky white waters hitting against the rugged rocks and cool mist spraying on the spectators is as refreshing as it can get. Mallalli Waterfalls are massive, around 1000 metres high and originate from River Kumaradhara. The lush green jungles surrounding the falls, the pool where the ferocious water hits, and the melodious sound of falls combine to offer an experience that is nothing but remarkable. These waterfalls in Coorg will simply take your breath away. How To Reach: -Air – Nearest airport is Bangalore airport -Road – 25 kms from Somwarpet, and the most convenient way of commuting to falls is through taxis or jeeps Best Time To Visit: June to September

SHARAVATHI ADVENTURE CAMP

  Sharavathi Adventure Camp is a beautiful get away to explore in the Sayhadri range. The area is filled with beautiful valleys, rivers and lush green grasslands and forests, all in a beautiful symphony. The Sharavathi Adventure Camp is an ideal location to experience the quintessential magic of the monsoons. During your stay here you can indulge in various activities like trekking, kayaking, coracle riding and boating. For the nature and wildlife enthusiast, this is an ideal location for nature walks and bird watching. You can also go visit the densely wooded deciduous forest of the Sharavathi Valley Wildlife Sanctuary.  The check in time is 12:30 PM and check out time is at 11:00 AM. The Sharavathi Adventure camp has 20 spacious and comfortable cottages. The cottages have tiled roofs and two-walled design. All the cottages overlook the Talakalale Reservior and offer beautiful vistas of the islands sprinkled in the reservoir.

HOGENAKKAL WATERFALL

  Hogenakkal Waterfalls  exhibit a view that never fails to leave one stunned. The name Hogenakkal means ‘smoking rocks’. The waterfalls were given this name because as the falls gushes 66 feet down, the clear water hits the rocky cliffs underneath and forms a view that appears as if it was emitting smoke. The peculiar formation of these waterfalls is what impresses the spectators the most. It is definitely one of the most therapeutic and stunning views one can witness. You can also take a boat ride in the waters of the falls. How To Reach: -Air – Nearest airport is in Bangalore -Road – Around 4 hours drive from Bangalore Best Time To Visit: October to March

THALAIYAR FALLS

  Thalaiyar Falls , also known as Rat Tail Falls is a waterfall on the Manjalar River, a tributary of the Vaigai River, located in the Devadanapatti of Theni District, Tamil Nadu State, South India. It is 975 ft tall and is the highest waterfall in Tamil Nadu, the sixth highest waterfall in India and the 267th highest in the world. Rat Tail Falls is considered inaccessible to the general public, as there is no road to it. The top of the falls is a rewarding and challenging hike destination. Hikers should be cautious, as two Western tourists died in 2006 when they fell from the top of the Falls. It is possible to hike to the bottom of the falls in the dry season, beginning at the Manjalar Dam. This difficult hike proceeds along a path through Mango orchards and potato fields around the Manjalar Reservoir and up along the stream as far as a small shrine, dedicated to the Goddess Kamakshi. ATHIRAPPILLY FALLS

  An ideal place to spend monsoons with your better-half, the Athirappilly Waterfalls are the largest falls in Kerala. The sizzling silver water droplets fall down into the lush green forest, which is home to species like Great Indian Hornbill, Cochin Forest Cane Turtle and the Nilgiri Langur. Appropriately called the ‘Niagara in India’, Athirappilly falls can make anyone fall in love at first sight. How To Reach: -Air –Kochi International Airport -Rail – 30 kms. from the Chalakudi Railway Station Best Time To Visit: June to September, i.e. the monsoons.
